Risk Evaluation
Risk Evaluation is a multi-step process aimed at identifying specific exposures in a workplace environment that could lead to worker injury. One of the first steps in this process is to identify the underlying cause of each exposure. The frequency and severity of injury relative to each exposure is also predicted and compared against actual historical data, which determines the relative risk. The risks are then prioritized in order of severity to help with the latter process of developing solutions to reduce risk associated with each exposure.
An essential element of effective Risk Evaluation is the level of knowledge that the evaluator has regarding the workplace that is being examined. Understanding the organization’s policies, procedures, business and safety objectives, and safety culture contribute to the success of the Risk Evaluation. The more intimate and accurate the evaluator’s knowledge of these aspects is—the more effective the risk reduction solutions will be—and the greater the organization’s return on this investment will be.
