Simon Goodhead Speaks at SFPE Regarding Global Trends in Fire Protection Engineering
 Duluth, GA – January 16, 2008. Simon Goodhead was the featured speaker at the January membership meeting of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) – Greater Atlanta Chapter. Mr. Goodhead is a Senior Fire Protection Consultant for Harrington Group, Inc.’s Duluth, Georgia office. Prior to coming to Harrington Group, he served as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer for several years at Arup Fire in Manchester, England, where his experience emphasized fire strategy alternative solution development in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Mr. Goodhead’s presentation, Global Trends in Fire Protection Engineering, represented the different fire protection engineering approaches being used throughout the world. He explored regions such as the United States, Hong Kong, China, the Gulf Nations, and Australia. Mr. Goodhead also addressed trends being used in the United Kingdom and Ireland by providing case studies for residential and office buildings, using several of his own previous fire protection strategy projects. In addition, the presentation described the growing trend of performance-based design fire protection solutions, rather than prescriptive codes, in much of the world. “For me, fire protection engineering is the term for designing a building where the design does not have to be altered to fit the rules, but where fire protection engineering is used to provide an equivalent or higher level of safety by using the tools we are all familiar with – sprinklers, detection, structural protection, combustion science, and fire dynamics.”, Mr. Goodhead said.
