Phil Friday Named to Serve on the Project Technical Panel for the Fire Protection Research Foundation

Duluth, GA – August 6, 2007. The Fire Protection Research Foundation has named Phil Friday, P.E. to serve on the Project Technical Panel to oversee the validation of oxidizer classification. Mr. Friday will act as an advisor on the panel and will be reviewing the progress of the overall project, as well as reviewing and commenting on the final project report.
The oxidizer classification system will be included in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 400 Hazardous Materials Code. NFPA defines oxidizers as “materials that readily yield oxygen or other oxidizing gas that can increase the burning rate of typical combustible materials”. Oxidizers have been found to be involved in many large loss fires. According to the Fire Protection Research Foundation, the benefits of developing a classification system for oxidizers includes a “more scientific and less subjective classification for oxidizers in their intended packaging” and a “method to screen and evaluate oxidizers and formulated products”.

Mr. Friday is a Fire Protection Engineer/Fire Investigator with Harrington Group, Inc. in Duluth, GA. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a Master of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering and a Bachelors degree in Chemistry. In addition to his educational background, he has 7 years of experience in fire protection system design, building and fire code analysis, fire origin and cause determination, forensic fire reconstruction and analysis using computer modeling and laboratory testing, and fire protection system failure analysis. Mr. Friday is also a voting member of the NFPA Hazardous Chemicals Committee, which is developing the new NFPA 400 document.
